Insight on Observing Other Vehicles on the Road…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

While it’s easy to get comfortable when driving, particularly when taking a route that you’re familiar with or towards a regular destination. However, an essential part of defensive driving is staying alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. It’s become more difficult to do this as our use of cell phones has become more prevalent and act as a constant temptation while driving. But that being said, in order to make sure as a driver that you’re always in a position to react if you encounter a situation that has the potential to take you out of your comfort zone.

Keeping an eye on the other drivers and vehicles that are sharing the road is crucial when it comes to staying safe. There’s a lot you can tell about the kind of driver you may be dealing with simply by looking at their car. If you see minivan with bumper stickers or decals that indicate it’s driven by a family, you can assume it’s possible that the vehicle is full of children which means the driver is potentially distracted and so you should proceed with caution.

These assumptions won’t always be true but it’s something to take into consideration. If you see a construction vehicle in an area where road work is being done, you will want to be careful not to follow too closely as they may need to pull off the road. Other vehicles for which you should be cautious of include buses, semi trucks and vehicles pulling trailers.
