It’s never just about you.

I have been spending the better part of the last week putting together the content together for our latest online driver safety course for Tennessee.   Every time I get to go through the exercise of putting up the content, I get a personal refresher on a lot of the very important driver safety topics our courses cover, in particular the subjects related to the very real dangers posed by a driver behind the wheel who should not be.

I was golfing last weekend with some friends and I was asked if I had heard about the guy who hit and killed a pedestrian and was so drunk, he drove with the upper torso of the victim in his passenger seat for three miles.   Two of the foursome I was playing had heard about the accident, I had not until this conversation.

My friend who told the story said the driver was his friends husband and the father of their twin teenagers.  The utter shame and embarrassment, here was a professional, a family man, who was so intoxicated he did not even know he had hit someone, let alone the victim was literally in the passenger side of his vehicle.

Here was a very real story of someone who had failed to make the right choice and it was going to have devastating consequences, not only for the person he killed, but for his wife, his family and the family of his victim.

The victim, a kid who was going home from his job at Subway, had a car problem and never made it home to his parents.

Our course has an entire section called “Making the Right Decision”, a lot of our students and customers complain about it, I got a speeding ticket, not a DWI, why am I learning this.

Because it is not just about you and every time you drive, you need to make the right decision.   Take a little extra time to plan your route so you do not speed and make the right decision, never get behind the wheel when you cannot physically take it or focus on the act of driving.

You could save a lot of other people the heartache.
