Two weeks ago, DefensiveDriving.com had a booth at a little concert event here in Houston known as Buzzfest.   Buzzfest is put on by the areas local alternative/rock station, 94.5 the Buzz and featured some old 90’s standards such as Social Distortion and Jane’s Addiction.

Our booth had some great visitors and it was interesting to me the number of people who were asking me about using our course for ticket dismissal who had received tickets for speeds of greater than 90 MPH.   I talked with at least six people who had recently been ticketed in and around the Houston Metropolitan Area traveling in excess of 90MPH… I was stunned.

Speed literally kills and is the major factor in the severity of injury when it comes to automobile accidents.

The State of Texas has very specific penalties related for those who are in violation of the speed limit by more than 25MPH and these penalties do not involve taking an approved defensive driving course.   In fact, you cannot take an approved driver safety course if you exceed the speed limit by more than 25MPH.

Not only is it unsafe to travel these speeds, it could get you a night in jail.   Most of the people I talked with were doing well over 30MPH over the speed limit, which just isn’t a good idea.

If you are ticketed for going in excess of 25 MPH, you can be cited for reckless driving and possibly worse.   At 90 MPH it can potentially take almost 584 feet to come to a complete stop… or another way to think of it, you are going one mile in 40 seconds at that speed. The distance you travel and the distance you need to stop make anything over 90, very dangerous.

The real moral of the story, slow down, there is no need to go 90+ MPH.   As the saying goes, nothing good happens between 90 and 120 MPH.   If you go faster than that, well I am not sure what to say…
