Rules of the Road: The Importance Of Maintaining Tire Pressure Should Not Be Underestimated

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

Most of the time when we’ve parked our cars, either because we’ve arrived at our destination or because we’ve had to make a stop along the way, we’ll take a quick visual inspection of the vehicle. This is often something we do without even thinking about it. One of the things you may notice as you give your car a once over is if one of the tires seems a little low. When you make this observation, it’s something you should address immediately.

A low tire could indicate that it has a leak and needs repair. If you put that off, you could find yourself changing a flat, which is something no one ever wants to do. But a low tire could mean it’s just needs a little bit of air and all you have to do is pull up to the pump at the nearest gas station. However, many people simply try and “eyeball” the tire when they fill it with air and that’s a mistake that should be avoided.

You should always carry a tire pressure gauge in your car and if you don’t have one, you can purchase one for just a few dollars just about anywhere. By consulting your drivers manual, you’ll be able to determine how many pounds of pressure your tires should have or where to find that information. It’s critical for safety and gas mileage that all of your tires are always inflated to the proper pressure level. Once you’ve filled the tire, make sure you’re checking it again frequently to ensure it’s not a more serious issue that can cause you further problems while driving.
