Don’t Ignore Alerts From Your Car

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

Most of us drive cars now that give us alerts and warnings when something isn’t working properly. It can be something as simply as low fuel or something vague like the “check engine” light but this is a benefit drivers haven’t always had. It’s also something that we often take for granted. We often view these alerts as a reminder rather than a warning. That allows us to justify putting off addressing the issue because we convince ourselves it’s not pressing, at least right away.

While that is typically true, the reason those warnings are designed that way is so that we have enough time to fix the problem before it becomes pressing. Take the “low fuel” light an an example. If that light only went off when there was a half of gallon of gas left in the tank, there would be a lot more people running out of gas on a regular basis. Now while some people try and push how far they can go once they’ve been given the “low fuel” light, most use it as a friendly reminder that it’s time to gas up and do so shortly after being notified. In fact, many don’t even let the tank ever get that low.

The same approach should be taken with any alerts from the car. Even if you feel like the issue is something minor, like low washer fluid, you should address the problem as soon as possible. This allows you to avoid any major problems at an inopportune time. By following these defensive driving tips, you usually sidestep a wide variety of driving issues
