Mature Driving Laws

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

More and more Americans are outliving their ability to drive safely.  Mature/older drivers have a high crash risk.  This is the result of three diminished basic functions that affect driving abilities: vision, cognition & motor function.

Changes to vision, physical strength & cognition can contribute to a loss in self confidence in the ability to operate a motor vehicle.  Faced with this choice some mature drivers risk personal injury rather than give up their license.

Some states have put in legislation with certain restriction on drivers as they age.   These include increased frequency of renewals and increased frequency of road tests and vision tests.

Completing a specialized mature driving course can help keep seniors safer while driving.  These courses help mature drivers become more aware of their driving skills and finding ways to identify any problems that can be addressed before it becomes too  difficult to be behind the wheel.  Many of the topics are also covered in a defensive driving course, however specific attention is paid to noticing and adapting to changing physical skills and adapting to them.
