Inattentional Blindness

If you have you have experienced a phenomenon called inattentional blindness or perceptual blindness. Inattentional blindness is the inability to perceive something that is in plain sight.
We can all imagine how inattentive blindness may relate to distracted driving. The DefensiveDriving.com course features Ann Hillstrom, a visual perception expert. Ann Hillstrom gives the following advice that relates to inattentional blindness, “We need to be aware that other people are not paying attention to what we’re paying attention to. So, we anticipate that they may not see us, they may not see oncoming danger the same way we are.”
Inattentional blindness can prevent timely and proper reactions. Some have equated multi-tasking to inattentional blindness due to its overlooking nature. The truth is that not only does inattentional blindness cause distracted driving, it can also impact us while we are walking. I personally have witnessed people walking, talking or not, run into a wall- and not for the fun of it. The moral of the lesson is to beware of inattentional blindness. It may cause distracted driving.
