Employee Driver Safety Risk

The State of Massachusetts has a great document related to the “Driving Safety Hazard” which really is a great model for any organizations who are concerned about driver safety amongst their employees who are in the business of driving.

Keep in mind motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of occupational fatalities in the United States, it is important to understand the hazard presented and the frequency of the hazard risk.

The hazard, as defined by the State of Massachusetts is if an employee may be required to drive from their primary work location to meetings, trainings, project sites, other state agency offices, etc. as part of their work duties.

They then measure the level of employee exposure to this hazard based on the frequency and number of employees that are conducting a task with the risk.   For example, if driving to a monthly sales meeting was required by 40 employees, the total exposure would be 40 times per month the employer and employees would be exposed to this hazard.

Once the hazard and risk are measured, there is a very specific set of actions the state recommends, a written policy, who is in charge of enforcement, training and certification programs, controls and emergency response planning.   To read more about the hazard, go here.
