Do not speed in Switzerland

I had the opportunity to drive on the Autobahn in Germany around ten years back and I remember my rental Peugeot’s rubber band was fully wound up at 220 Kilometers per hour (about 140 MPH) while I was still getting passed like mad by BIG German sedans.   Neither my mother nor my aunt were pleased about the speed I was traveling, but when in Rome…

Which leads me to this… a Swedish man is facing a $1 million dollar fine for speeding in Switzerland.   The police have impounded his $240,000 Mercedes SLS AMG sedan and took his drivers license.  He was going 180 MPH and in Switzerland it is a criminal offense to exceed the country’s speed limit by more than 15 MPH, the nationwide speed limit is 72 MPH so at 180, well he had that speed licked.

In Switzerland, there is not an option for ticket dismissal nor can one take an approved defensive driving course to reduce or take away the points.   It is a criminal offense and you are assessed a fine based on your ability to pay, apparently this Swede can afford  a big fine!   The Swiss already have the world record speeding ticket assessing a $290,000 fine.

So do speeding tickets based on income improve driver safety?
