Common Driving Mistakes for Teens

My neighbor and I talked the other night about his 3 boys (ages 13,14 & 16) getting ready to start driving.  Sort of a good news, bad news situation for him.   We talked about the many mistakes we made while starting out and wondered how we could convey them to teenagers who seem to know everything for their own safety.

The first one was speeding.  Is suppose it doesn’t take some over funded government survey to make it official…. but teens find themselves invincible and getting behind the wheel is a new power to enjoy.  However I guess I can look back and say I was lucky.  I didn’t have the skills to understand and deal with sudden obstacles.  I just drove.

The distracted driving issue might be a bit greater these days than it was many years ago.  Every kid seems to have a smart phone of some kind and although I didn’t grow up with one, I had the car filled with friends who were just as distracting.  I would often over fill the car with people and often had no business driving around.  But I did, and I was lucky to not be in or cause an accident.

We also talked about some friends we had that were very timid and uncertain when they first started out.  Diving too slow and hesitating all the time.  I suppose they were just as troublesome on the roads as we were speeding around.

The main thing for teens and their parents is to find a reputable driving safety school and spend time behind the wheel.  You can take online driver safety courses or go to a classroom, but no matter what you choose…..parents and teens need to spend time…lots of time behind the wheel going over every possible driving situation.
