You can’t steer when you’re airborn

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in You don't see that everyday!

Was living in San Diego at the time. Me and several friends had driven up to Julian in the mtns east of San Diego for the day. I had an old 64 Limited Chrysler Imperial LeBeron. It was a huge car probably weighed 3 tones all glass and metal and chrome. Well we were headed home and going down a grade. I could see the road ahead was coming to some traffic and a curve. On the right side of the road was about a 300 ft drop off. I stepped on the brakes and all i heard was air escaping and had no brakes. The old Imperials back then were all push button. So I stepped on the emergency brake and still only pssssssh. So as soon as the on coming traffic cleared i took it across the uphill lane and across a ditch a gravel road and then over a ravine about 8 ft deep all with a munch of bushes that were about 6 ft tall. The car sailed over the ravine and did you know you can’t steer when you are airborn? Well the car landed toes first and came to a gentle stop, well not gentle but it stopped. Most everybody in the car had been asleep but when they woke up we were surrounded by bushes and you couldn’t see out the windows. I got everybody out and the car was bent into V with a crease across the roof and the front wheels were pigeon toed. The car was no good anymore but everybody was safe. People stopped and asked if we were ok and needed help.. I asked them just to contact the police for us. They HWY Patrol showed up and said good driving, most people decide to take the drop off on the other side of the road, and that my big ole car saved us. If it had been a smaller car it probably would have flipped. Afterwards we found out the brake line had broken. Same thing had happened two years before when i pulled into an auto parts store to buy brake fluid and they failed and I drove into the parts store front window. That car tried to kill me.
