3 Tips for Driving in Snow

Whether you live in a state where it snows frequently or you are visiting one, learning how to drive in snow takes a lot of concentration and patience. While it may be informative, no driving safety course can perfectly prepare you for every situation you’ll face out there on the snow-covered roads. A lot of learning how to drive in snow just comes from experience. The number of accidents and collisions caused by snow is sky high, but if you already have some tips and techniques in mind, you’ll have a better chance of not being involved in one of them when conditions get bad around you. Here are three things to remember in order to drive safely in the snow.

1) Driving slowly is crucial

The faster you drive, the less time you have to react to changing conditions around you. Reacting too late can be dangerous even in perfect road conditions, but on snowy, slippery roads it can cause even more serious issues. If you brake too quickly, you may begin to slide. When you begin to slide, it’s not always easy to regain control of your vehicle. If you’re not careful, you could find yourself exposed to oncoming traffic. You could become seriously injured or even killed.

2) Snow tires help

Though snow tires may cost a little bit extra, you’ll be wishing you had them if you decide to forego them and you get in a terrible accident. When your safety is on the line, it’s not worth skimping. Getting more traction will help your car navigate the wintry conditions. Also, winter typically only lasts about three months, so you can use the same snow tires for multiple winters. When winter is over, simply put your non-winter tires back on and keep your winter tires in the garage for the next year.

3) Leaving earlier is smart

It may sound like a no-brainer, but when road conditions are bad, it will take longer to get to your destination. Check the forecast the night before so that when you wake up in the morning for work you won’t be shocked. Plan ahead, leave earlier, and maintain patience. So many accidents happen because people are in a hurry. While it may be frustrating to have to move more slowly, your safety is top priority. And if you leave early enough, you’ll never have to worry about being late!

Apply Them

These tips are simple, but surprisingly, many people fail to follow them. Don’t be one of those people. When you fail to drive cautiously, you are endangering more lives than just your own. Stay smart, stay safe, and enjoy the rest of winter.
