Check Engine Light Tells You Something is Wrong…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

It’s become so common for drivers to ignore a “Check Engine” light on their car that you can often find mechanics and auto repair shops who advertise services related to getting that light to shut off. Part of this reason is that the sensors in a car that trigger the “Check Engine” light can result in a false positive when there’s actually nothing wrong with the engine. But unless you’re a trained mechanic who has personally been under the hood to investigate the problem, that’s not an assumption you can make.

It’s quite possible when that light comes on that there’s something very wrong with your car and if you don’t have it looked at soon, it could become much worse. Even if you’ve had it checked out in the past and were told it is simply a faulty sensor that you didn’t choose to fix, you should have it looked at it again later to make sure there still isn’t a problem.

The same should be said for any other warnings or indicators on your car that tells you something isn’t right. It’s common for drivers to disregard these warnings because the car feels as if it’s driving normally. But you’re taking a great risk by not having your car checked out when it is actually telling you to. If you think you’re saving time and money but ignoring these warnings or putting them off, you’re likely to spend more on both later after that problem has gotten worse.
