Prepare for the Differences with RV Traveling…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

The summer is upon us and that means many of us will be vacationing and taking road trips to different parts of the country. For some, that means driving RV’s and campers that only get use during this time of the year. Before you embark on a journey in one of these vehicles, you should be sure that it is in top condition and that you’re fully prepared for the differences in driving them compared to the car or truck you typically drive.

Anyone that has ever gotten behind the wheel of an RV knows that it immediately feels different and that some adjustments need to be made regarding how they’re driven. One of the first things you’ll notice is that you’ll need to rely totally on your side mirrors rather than a rear view mirror. This leads to more blind spots and it will require you to pay closer attention to the vehicles surrounding you on the road. You’ll need to be sure that you’re properly signaling any turns or lane changes and giving yourself additional room to do so.

There are other considerations that you’ll need to make as well, such as being aware of any potential clearance restrictions you may come across. It’s also important that you minimize distraction within the vehicle while driving. You should also avoid ever having someone drive one of these vehicles that is inexperienced so that you don’t risk a serious accident. An RV can be a lot of fun to travel in but you need to be aware of the challenges they present.
