Poor Conditions can Lead to Road Obstructions…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

Driving in severe weather presents a number challenges. Most people generally associate bad weather, such as heavy rain, snow or thick fog, with poor visibility or slick road conditions. These are certainly things you need to be cognizant of when driving in this type of weather and adjust your driving accordingly.

Sometimes heavy rain can result in pooling of water on the road, the depth of which can be misleading. If you see water on the road, you should proceed with extreme caution. If the puddle is shallow, it likely doesn’t present as much of an issue as when it’s deeper, but the possibility of hydroplaning still exists. However, one of the biggest mistakes drivers make is underestimating how much water has collected on a particular patch of road and they simply try to drive right through it without slowing down. When a car drives in deep water, not only is it possible to lose control of the vehicle but getting water into the engine and other vital components can damage the car and even prevent it from running at all.

When driving in snowy conditions, there is a possibility that you’ll encounter a drift that has blown across the road. This can lead to drivers who attempt to go right through the drift, which can have them getting stuck or worse. Instead, you should slow down and try to avoid it if possible. Never assume you can make it through a rain puddle or snow drift without damaging your vehicle or creating an even larger obstacle for fellow drivers.
