Get The Junk Out Of Your Trunk

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

The trunk of your car should be relatively empty most of the time. The trunk is designed to help you move a load from one place to another but it shouldn’t serve as a permanent storage facility. This is especially true if you’ve got something particularly heavy in the trunk because that can greatly impact your gas mileage. Many drivers will focus on keeping the interior of their car immaculate but achieve that goal by simply throwing things in their trunk. If this is a habit of yours, you should be working to break it.

The other problem you run into if you’ve got a trunk full of stuff is that should you need to get to the spare tire, which is often located under the mats in the trunk, you won’t be able to. Changing the tire on the side of a busy road can be tricky as is, but if you’ve also got to unload boxes of things you haven’t taken the time to put somewhere else, you’re only increasing the risk of danger.

There are few things that you should keep in your trunk at all times. As mentioned, spare tires are often located in the trunk. Additionally, an emergency kit and other supplies should be stored there. This can include things like jumper cables, a first aid kit, quarts of oil, extra water for a leaking radiator and more. You simply need to avoid hauling unnecessary cargo so that you’re prepared for any situation.
