Be Cognizant Of Problems a GPS Can Present

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

In just the last few years, the prevalence of GPS navigation has increased dramatically. This includes both the the kind that stay in our cars as well as those that can be accessed with smart phones and other mobile devices. They represent a very useful technological advancement that has made it much easier for drivers to navigate in areas that are unfamiliar. In fact, many drivers use their GPS when driving to a destination they’ve been to often if only to help them track exactly what time they’ll arrive.

However, it should be noted that as great as GPS are, there are some drawbacks that should be remembered when using these devices. Even if you’re utilizing a GPS that reads the directions to you out loud, you’ll still have a need to glance at the screen from time to time and that means you’re taking your eyes off of the road. Any time your attention is taken away from the road, it can be risky. This is especially true if you’ve got to look closely at that GPS screen to analyze exactly where it’s telling you to go. You should glance quickly but keep your primary focus on the road.

Another issue with GPS can be their accuracy. Even the most updated maps aren’t always able to account for road construction or unexpected detours. You have to be ready to adjust accordingly in these scenarios. And remember if you’re ever unclear about what your GPS is telling you, pull over and look more closely at a map or stop and ask for directions.
