Avoid “Zoning Out” While Driving

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

There are many things that can distract us while driving even if we do everything we can to avoid the obvious distractions. When you’re alone in the car, chances are you’re listening to music, perhaps talk radio or it’s possible you’re a driver who likes to simply think while driving and prefers silence. While none of those seems like much of a distraction, they can lead to you “zoning out” which is something you’ll want to avoid.

If you’re deeply engrossed in a talk radio segment or even an audiobook, it can be very easy to have your mind become focused on that and less on the crucial ask at hand, defensive driving. You want to ensure that you’re not so into what you’re listening to that you’re less alert and aware of your surroundings. The same can be said for when you’re really getting into the music you’re playing, especially if it’s too loud.

Another time when people risk “zoning out” is when they are deep in thought about something. It could be something mundane or it could be something serious that’s been weighing on your mind but either way, you must be careful not to get distracted by your thoughts. That can be difficult to do when you’re talking about particularly important or emotional thoughts but you need to make sure your focus remains on the road. If you find yourself overwhelmed with emotion for whatever reason, pull over and take a minute to gather yourself. If that means avoiding a serious accident, you’ll certainly be glad you did.
