Merging Safely

Entering a highway can be dangerous. You are trying to merge into a fast-moving stream of vehicles with limited visibility and with pressure from the cars behind you that are also eager to merge.

Always enter a highway at or near the speed of traffic. Do not stop before merging with highway traffic unless absolutely necessary. Since highway traffic has the right of way, adjust your speed to compensate for the other drivers who are already on the highway.

Any time you change lanes, enter a highway from an entrance lane or merge with traffic on another road, you need a gap of four seconds between oncoming vehicles. That gives both you and the car behind you a two-second following distance.
