Five Defensive Driving Tips You Should Know

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Driving and Safety Tips

There’s no better way to combat car accidents and other mishaps on the road than by practicing defensive driving tactics. Read these five defensive driving tips to help you be a smarter driver.

  1. Be aware of your surroundings. Some drivers only focus on the road ahead or the car directly in front of them, but it’s important to keep your eyes constantly moving when you’re driving. Always be aware of what’s going on in front of you, next to you and behind your car when you’re on the road. Try to:
    • Avoid keeping eyes locked in one point on the road
    • Regularly check side and rear view mirrors
    • Periodically scan all sides of the road and your fellow driver
  2. Eliminate all distractions. Texting while driving isn’t the only culprit when it comes to distracted driving. Anything that takes your attention away from the road should be avoided, like:
    • Talking on the phone
    • Eating or drinking
    • Listening to loud music
    • Programming your GPS
    • Putting on makeup or shaving
  3. Avoid drowsy driving. Everyone knows you shouldn’t drive under the influence, but did you know that driving when drowsy is almost as dangerous as driving drunk? When you’re tired, it takes longer to respond to a quick stop ahead of you or another surprise on the road, which may cause an accident.  Be sure to:
    • Only drive when fully awake
    • Pull over if your eyes feel heavy or you feel drowsy
    • Avoid overnight driving or taking long car trips without proper rest beforehand
  4. Don’t assume. Making assumptions about other drivers can cause problems on the road. Follow these simple tips to avoid this trap:
    • Don’t assume other drivers can see you, even if you can see them.
    • Don’t assume another driver will do what you expect them to do. For example, just because a driver has their turn signal on doesn’t mean they will make the turn. Always be sure of another car’s actions before you make your next move.
    • Don’t assume other drivers will obey traffic laws and signals. For example, even if there is a no turn sign at an intersection, you should still make sure no cars are going to break that law before you go.
  5. Stay insured. Car insurance may not be a driving tactic used on the road, but it’s an important part of defensive driving as a whole. Make sure you have the coverage you need to keep yourself and others protected on the road. If you’re not satisfied with your current car insurance, shop around and get an online car insurance quote from another trusted insurance company today.
