‘Don’t mess with Texas’ isn’t just a slogan for a souvenir t-shirt, it’s our way of life. Texas has been battling the litterbug for over 25 years. In that time Texas has spent millions of dollars trying to keep our freeways clean and clear of clutter. In a time where we’re trying to go as green as possible and protect the environment littering is the last thing we should be doing. It’s counter productive and punishable by a fine of up to $500. For any repeat offenders, the penalty is increased to a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $2000 and up to 180 days in jail.

Litter is any misplaced waste strewn or scattered about. It is best to not transport unsecured debris in the back of your own vehicle. When it blows out of your window or truck bed, it becomes litter. Litter is not just flying papers; it includes abandoned junk cars, discarded tires and even pouring motor oil in storm drains. Texas needs for us to take personal responsibility for our own garbage. We can all do our part by keeping a small bag for trash in our cars or round up a few friends to clean up a neighborhood. Plain and simple, littering is selfish. Be a friend to the state and ‘Don’t mess with Texas’.
