Don’t Ignore Your Check Engine Light!

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

Unless you drive a car from the 30s or 40s, you’ve probably had a warning light come on at some point or another; whether it’s your brake light, airbag light, tire pressure light, or some other light, it should be recognized that these lights don’t come on for your entertainment or to make the dash board look prettier. No, these lights actually do have meaning and should definitely not be ignored while driving and this is especially the case with the check engine light.

Don’t ignore your check engine light! If a light in the shape of an engine (usually with the words “check engine”) comes on, then you should realize that there is a problem with the engine. Although this light does not mean you should stop immediately and get out of your car, it can mean you should take the car to a repair shop as soon as possible; this is especially the case if the check engine light begins to blink repeatedly! Indeed, ignoring your check engine light could be extremely dangerous, as it is possible that a fire could start if the problem is ignored for long.

In the case of your check engine light coming on, it is much better to be safe than sorry. Whether your check engine light comes on and stays on or comes on and then goes away, the prudent decision is to have your car looked at by a professional in order to determine the specific problem.
