construction zone workers

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in southernbelledriver

Living in one of the largest cities, we are familiar with driving through construction zones. Defensive driving in a construction zone starts with driving at the posted speed. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that the number one cause of death and injury in a construction work zone is speeding.

Construction worker’s only protection from oncoming traffic is a plastic cone or drum. In addition, rocks and other debris that can be kicked up by passing vehicles become even more dangerous to workers, your car, and other nearby vehicles the faster you drive.

Workers who must be on highways try hard to warn you of their presence by using orange signs, equipment, flags, and jackets. It’s up to you to ensure both your own and the workers’ safety by driving slowly through work areas.

Don’t stop or slow down to watch roadwork. Keep going. Obey any special signs or instructions as you pass. Each of us, as a safe driver, has a responsibility to exercise caution and good judgment regardless of the behavior other motorists’ display. Consideration for the safety of construction workers and other motorists can help turn highway construction areas into “safe zones” for everyone.
