7 Dumbest Excuses People Use To Try and Get Out of Traffic Tickets

It’s one of the worst moments for a driver.

You are driving along minding your own business and suddenly you see the flashing lights behind you. Groaning you pull over and nervously wait for the officer to come up and tell you how fast you were going.

At this point many of us are racking our brains to find a way to get out of a ticket and get off on a warning. While some of us manage to keep our heads during this situation, others make up the dumbest excuses that the officer has probably heard hundreds of times and has absolutely no sympathy for (time for some traffic school). Here are seven of them.

1. I Didn’t See the Sign

Unless the sign was purposefully concealed behind a tree, this excuse really doesn’t hold any water. It’s the driver’s responsibility to pay attention to traffic signs. Otherwise, just imagine what a four way stop would be like if nobody paid attention to the stop sign or worse nobody saw the red light and just kept driving through the intersection. Seeing as our entire road system depends on traffic signs, try a better excuse next time.

2. I Wasn’t Hurting Anybody

There is no asterisk next to the speed limit that says it only applies in dangerous weather conditions or if you plan on getting in an accident that day. Plus, the officer probably disagrees that you weren’t a danger to other drivers on the road because he or she pulled you over for a reason, but go ahead and try this one if you want to come across like a snooty teenager. Just don’t get upset when you are handed the heftiest fine possible.

3. I’m Trying to Find a Bathroom

Really? Like the one in that gas station or that McDonalds or how about that supermarket that you just sped passed? Or, if you are speeding through the middle of nowhere, try a tree? Given how easy it is to find a public restroom these days this form of emergency is hardly going to gain sympathy let alone a police escort to the gas station up the street.

4. I Was Following My GPS

You might catch the officer by surprise with this one because it hasn’t been available for the past 50 years, but the surprise will quickly be followed by a pitying look that you can’t think for yourself. After all, the GPS doesn’t overrule the law of the land (especially if you’re using a smartphone), and they have also been known to lead people directly into the ocean or up a freeway off ramp.

5. I Was Going Downhill

There is no separate speed limit for when you are going downhill, so this excuse is likely to just annoy the officer. After all, you should have mastered the fact that you go faster downhill when you were still driving a tricycle.

6. I’m Late to Pick Someone Up

All this excuse shows is a lack of planning and responsibility on your part – a bad impression to give to a cop considering seriously reducing the weight of your wallet.

7. I Spilled Coffee in My Lap

Wouldn’t this be cause to pull over and mop up the hot mess, not drive like a mad person? In any case, the officer can easily tell if you are lying with this one as they can quickly tell if you really have coffee all over you or not.
