Texting, Driving and Walking

While watching CNN recently, I saw a report that highlighted texting and walking. I was overjoyed! Just as I despise texting and driving, texting and walking bothers me.

I cannot count the number of times someone texting and walking has run into me as we were turning the corner. People texting and walking do not realize which side of the walkway they are on, when they are heading into an obstruction or who is around them. I see texting and walking so much, I decided to try it for myself. The details of my experience are below.

I had my head down on the elevator, texting my younger cousin that lives by text. I exited the elevator, rounded the corner, headed to the glass door to exit and walked out to my vehicle. I felt a couple of bad looks shot my way, almost bumped into someone, and almost hit the glass door.

Needless to say I will not text and walk again.

This makes me recall the DefensiveDriving.com course and the information provided on texting and driving. According to the state approved defensive driving course, “Poor driving habits such as going too fast, not using your mirrors, eating a sandwich, talking on a cellular phone, or lighting a cigarette, may cause you to miss information that may be critical to your driving decision-making.”
