Tollway Driving

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Driver Safety For You & Your Family

Lately, the City of Houston has experienced a string of accidents involving toll roads, also known as tollways. Unfortunately, most of the toll road incidents have ended in multiple fatalities.

As you may know, many toll roads are designed with an express lane which allows drivers to pass through the toll ways without having to stop and pay a cashier. Drivers utilizing a tollway, whether express or service lane, should be very cautious. Tollways are typically divided by concrete partitions. Nothing anyone would want to have contact with.

According to DefensiveDriving.com, “If you have the option of hitting something hard or something soft, hit whatever is the softest.” If you are on a toll way, it will be very difficult to find something soft to hit. You are surrounded by concrete and cars. Following the state approved defensive driving course instructions, always be cognitive of your speed in high traffic situations.

The Wheels in Motion course covers the path of least resistance. A traffic safety expert says”….really instead of looking at what we are going to hit, or what we think we’re going to hit, it’s far better to look at the open spaces…..Look at our exit points.”

There are great sources of information for driver safety and proper reactions. For more information visit DefensiveDriving.com.
