What is distracted driving?

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Helping You Drive Safely

Today, with the increased ability of using cell phones while driving, it seems that everyone is focused on the dangers of distracted driving in terms of the use of mobile devices.  While there is reason for concern with mobile devices, it is important to remember that ANY distraction in the car is dangerous and can be deadly.

A new AAA survey shows that nearly 60% of dog owners have driven while distracted by their pets. In sudden stops, unrestrained pets can land in their owners’ lap and make them crash.  The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests drivers restrain their pets, but only 17% ever use restraints.

My young children can certainly be, at times, a major distraction in the car.  The radio can also be a distraction.  Other vehicles on the road could be a distraction.  Simply because the focus right now is on mobile devices, I urge you to be aware of your driving environment throughout your drive.  Focus on the driving task at hand.

DefensiveDriving.com speaks to distracted driving and many other unforeseen dangers on the road.  For more information, visit our site at www.DefensiveDriving.com
