And the voters have spoken

Tuesday was Election Day across the country and as everyone knows, it was a landmark election.   Why would I write about Election Day on a driver safety blog?   Well, in Houston, there was Proposition 3, which basically was a vote for or against red light cameras in the city.

On one side, those who were opposed to the red light cameras, stating they were not about safety, they were about generating revenue for the city and they were unconstitutional as the alleged “offender” never had the opportunity to cross examine their accuser.

On the other side, emergency responders and safety advocates stated the cameras actually make driving more safe, as individuals are less likely to run red lights in intersections controlled by the cameras.

I am really oversimplifying both arguments and the voters did vote in Houston to ban the cameras… is this a good thing?

DefensiveDriving.com knows the voters have spoken and this actually is not a bad thing for the Texas Driver Safety Market, but at the end of the day, it is sad we have to have a vote and a legal debate regarding running red lights, which common sense and driver safety training tells you, you should stop.
