Kids – the biggest distraction

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in The Daily Drive

With all talk about distracted driving, the behaviors people typically associate with distracted driving, texting while driving or talking on cell phones while driving, the one habit they do not think about is the kid in the back seat.   Today, I was doing my best to remember how to keep a positive attitude and not let my emotions enter to my thoughts while driving, but it was real hard to exercise mature driving while the little girl was in the back seat – screaming not singing to Taylor Swift or asking me to get something for her or that she was hungry.   It is hard to focus on driving safely when your child is driving you to distraction.   You love them and want to pay attention, but that is not what any good parent should be doing when they are driving.   The parent should be focused on the task of driving not on the pitch of the kids voice or the stuffed animal on the floor.

On the way to work today – I saw one of those incidents, it involved a truck driver with a bunch of telephone poles, no doubt someones fleet driver (now in need of fleet driver training) and two ladies who were clearly either distracted driving or not giving enough of a space cushion and one really messed up car.

Today’s tally of accidents I witnessed in Houston impacting my commute – 3.

One of today’s drivers could have used this safety driving video to avoid the car in front of her.
