Don’t Ignore the Need for a Roadside Safety Kit…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

Driving long distances used to be something people were more concerned about but this was prior to the smart phone revolution which resulted in most people carrying what amounts to a personal computer always connected to the Internet in their pockets. However, the fact that you can now access the Internet easily through your phone shouldn’t make you overconfident regarding a potential break down of your car on a road trip, or even on your basic daily commute.

First and foremost, you’re not always going to get ideal coverage on your phone, so in an emergency situation, it might not be as helpful as you expect. However, even with your phone, you should still always keep an emergency kit in your car at all times. Doing so can save you time, money and maybe even your life. Perhaps the most common mechanical problem people face when driving is a flat tire. Before you take any road trip, you should make sure that your spare is properly inflated and you have the necessary tools to change the tire if needed.

Other things that can come in handy during a time of need are a basic automotive tool kit, a flashlight, road flares, water, extra clothes for warmth during the winter and a first aid kit. For whatever reason, jumper cables used to be much more common than they are now but you should always have a set with you in case you get to your car and have a dead battery. You can never be too prepared when you’re driving, regardless if it’s a long distance or a short one.
