Driving At Dusk Presents Challenges

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

If your commute from work to home at the end of the day has you traveling around dusk, you’re well aware of how those conditions can sometimes make driving difficult. It’s a tricky time of the day because one moment you could be staring directly into some blinding sunlight and minutes later, you’ll find that it’s gotten extremely dark. Either of these situations has the potential of limiting your visibility so it’s necessary to adjust and prepare accordingly so that they don’t lead to dangerous situations on the road.

If you know you’ll be driving into the sunlight as it goes down, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got a good pair of sunglasses that can be worn so that you’re able to minimize the effects. There are times when sunglasses alone will not be enough to block the sunlight from your eyes and when that’s the case, you’ll want to pull down your visor for additional shielding. As always, you also need to be cognizant of the fact that if you’re having a difficult time seeing through the sunlight, so too are your fellow drivers and you can’t count on them to make the necessary adjustments, so you need to be extra careful.

Once that sun goes down, don’t forget to take off your sunglasses. Your eyes may have adjusted to wearing them and you won’t even notice they’re still on. You’ll also want to flip on your headlights. In fact, it’s a good idea to do this even before the sun goes completely down just so that they are on immediately when needed.
