If You Share a Vehicle Adjust Seats and Mirrors…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

In many families, sharing vehicles is not only common but a requirement. This could mean that any given vehicle is being driven by two, three, four or more drivers on a regular basis. When this is the case, you need to be cognizant of the adjustments made to the mirrors and seat position each time you get in the car and then readjust as needed.

If you’re someone that has an above average height, you’ll notice immediately when someone much shorter has been driving your car because most of the time, a driver doesn’t return a seat to the position in which they found it once they’ve parked the car. The same can be said for the rear view and side mirrors (not to mention the radio stations!). However, you should take a moment to put the seats and mirrors where they need to be before you pull out of the driveway and not when you’re going down the road.

First off, it’s easier to make those adjustments when parked but also, when you move your seat and mirror when you’re actually driving, you’re taking your focus off the road and the other cars around you. This is something you should always avoid. It takes just a few seconds to get things back into place while you’re parked. If there isn’t a large height discrepancy between drivers, then it might not be obvious right away that these things need adjusted and only becomes evident once you’re actually driving. This is why it’s important to always check the positioning and blind spots whenever you get into a car.
