Stay Calm when Faced with a Mechanical Problem…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

When you’re driving and you notice something wrong with your car that needs immediate attention, such as a flat tire or series engine problem, it’s important that you react calmly. If you’re driving in heavy traffic and need to pull off the road, you’ll need to signal your intentions and make your way to the side in a manner that takes into account the other cars on the road. You’ll want to avoid slamming on your brakes as soon as you notice the problem but instead bring your car to a stop as slowly as possible.

Once you’ve made it to the shoulder, you’ll want to park as far from the road as possible but while being extremely conscious of how much space you have on the other side. You certainly don’t want to increase your problems by having your car get stuck. It’s possible that you this problem might occur on a piece of road that leaves you little to no room to pull over. When this is the case, you’ll need to assess if you can make it to a safer spot.

After you’re parked, you’ll want to be careful as you step out of the car and take an assessment of the problem. It’s important that you don’t go beyond your knowledge level when it comes to investigating cause of the issue otherwise you’re risking injury or worsening the problem. Depending on the situation, it could be best to simply contact the professionals and stay safely in your car until they arrive.
