Be Smart about Eating While Driving

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

It’s inevitable that drivers will eat when behind the wheel. Ideally, drivers would limit their activities to just driving but that’s something that hasn’t been realistic for quite some time. That’s evident every time you pass another car on the road and see someone talking on a phone (hopefully with a hands free device), fiddling with the radio, applying their makeup or trying to get the kids in the backseat to settle down.

And of course, depending on what you’re eating, there isn’t a huge risk with snacking when driving. However, you need to be extremely sensible when it comes to what it is you’re having for a snack while you drive. Clearly anything that requires more than minimal attention should be avoided. Something that requires a utensil to be eaten should be disqualified immediately so that you’re not constantly taking one or both of your hands off the steering wheel.

You should also stay away from messy foods while driving. Not only can they be difficult to handle but you’ll be concerned with spilling or making a mess. Should you spill something, you’ll instinctively divert your attention to it and away from the road. This means you should reconsider eating a big, messy cheeseburger from your favorite fast food joint even if you purchased it through a “drive” thru. Take a few minutes and eat the burger in the parking lot and then finish your fries while you’re driving. If you truly don’t have those few minutes, then it’s likely you shouldn’t be stopping to eat anyway.
