GPS’s Give the Right Directions but Not Always…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

Driving in an unfamiliar area can be stressful and make you tense when behind the wheel. A tense driver is one that isn’t as safe as they should be and so everything should be done to avoid having that tension while driving. This is why if you’re planning to drive in an area that is unfamiliar to you, you should prepare accordingly.

Many of us have become reliant on our GPS systems but when you use those devices often, it becomes clear that as accurate and helpful as they can be, they’re not always right. Relying solely on these devices for navigation can be a mistake, which is why you should spend some time going over the route manually when possible. Whether you use the internet to search for directions or even pull out that old atlas, simply running through the steps you’ll be taking and familiarizing yourself with the roads you’ll be using will make you more alert when driving in a new area.

This will allow you to keep an eye on upcoming roads and intersections so you can anticipate the exit you need to take because sometimes those GPS systems seemingly don’t tell you the turn you need to make until it’s upon you. That has some people swerving and braking at extremely dangerous points on the highway or interstate. If you missed your turn, do not hit the brakes or try and get over onto the off ramp. Be patient, wait for the next exit and ask for directions if needed to get back on track.
