Resist the Urge to Turn Your Music Up too Loud…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

It’s happened to all of us at one time or another: a song we love comes on the radio, we crank the volume way up and sing our lungs out, hoping no one see us…at least no one we know. There’s a certain freedom that comes with singing in the car that is only rivaled by the freedom we have when singing in the shower. It can be easy to get caught up in the moment but it’s important to remember that this isn’t a defensive driving technique.

Singing along the radio can be fine if done in moderation and as along as the proper attention is paid to the road but having the volume turned up too loud on your car stereo is something you should definitely avoid. If you’ve got the volume turned up too loud, you’re putting yourself at risk of not hearing notifications from your car. This can mean something as simple as the “ding” from your dashboard that alerts you that you’re running low on fuel or something as serious as the car’s engine making noises that should have you pulling over to the side of the road.

When you can’t hear what’s going on inside or outside of the car, you’re taking away one of your senses, which makes you less aware of your surroundings and thus, less safe when you’re behind the wheel. There’s nothing wrong with listening to your music loud while driving but there certainly is a level that’s considered too loud and it should be your goal to not exceed that level.
