Don’t Tailgate! Instead, Use the 3-Second Rule…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

A considerable number of accidents on the road today are the result of one driver following another car much too closely. Tailgating can easily lead to very serious rear-ending accidents, and without a doubt, if you are someone who from time to time follows other cars too closely when driving, then it’s important that you do your best to remember just how dangerous following others too closely is and instead, follow the 3-second rule.

You will no doubt have heard about the 3-second rule, at the very least during your time in driver’s education (for some, many years ago), but this rule never becomes obsolete and undoubtedly can lead to safer conditions on the road. As a refresher, the 3-second rule consists of waiting for the car in front of you to pass a stationary marker on the road (such as a road sign), and when the car’s rear bumper passes the object, begin counting- one one-thousand, two two-thousand, three three-thousand, and if your car’s front bumper passes the road marker before you can finish counting to three, then you will need to increase the distance between your car and the car in front of you.

Don’t be a tailgater! Following another car too closely is dangerous and all-around bad driving behavior. Instead, be sure to utilize the three second driving rule so that you can increase the chances of keeping yourself and others safe on the road.
